The Mews is a luxury renovation project of a charming coastal cottage in Whitstable, Kent. We were appointed to design a garden to compliment the modern modifications to the house and maximise the function of the small town garden. Vernacular materials create a series of outdoor spaces which feel well rooted to their coastal heritage - concrete, wood and steel; materials found in abundance in the nearby harbour and coastline. The internal concrete floor spills out to a polished concrete terrace, with a textural oak sett surface providing a dining terrace adjacent to this. Large windows frame views from within and angular steel sections create focal points throughout the garden, cleverly screening the outdoor shower from view. A serene lawn surrounded by a cloud clipped hedge provides a calm space to pause in the centre of the garden; linking the terrace spaces close to the house with the garden pod’s own private terrace to the rear.
